Quiet on the legislative front this week, or at least quiet in a way that clears our bar — an endangered-species habitat rule with real park-wide consequences is sitting in the watch list for exactly that reason. Worth watching whether next week gives it the second source it needs. For now: check conditions the night before you leave, not the week before, on all four of these.
This is a week of thresholds. Canyonlands reopened its Needles district as the Babylon Fire finally came under control, and Zion closed its Narrows right on schedule when monsoon storms rolled in — two parks doing exactly what they're supposed to do when conditions demand it. North Cascades went the other direction: two new fires joined a tripled Luna Fire this week, and the backcountry that guide has been sitting on, unpublished, just got harder to recommend without caveats. Yosemite's crowding problem, meanwhile, isn't weather or fire — it's policy. Dropping the reservation system produced exactly the packed, cliffside conditions on the Mist Trail that the system existed to prevent, and nobody in that video chose to be there. The pattern worth naming: some of this week's risk is the mountains doing what mountains do, and some of it is a choice somebody in Washington made in February landing on somebody's ankles in July. Four stories cleared the bar this week; several more — an endangered species habitat rule, a Yellowstone bridge project — didn't, either for timing or for thin sourcing. That's the filter working as intended.
North Cascades National Park
Border 1, Border 2, and a tripled Luna Fire make smoke and closures the default in North Cascades backcountry now, not the exception. If Ross Lake or the Beaver drainages are the point of your trip, build the smoke-day alternate before you leave, not after.
Two new fires — Border 1 and Border 2 — surfaced this week just south of the Canadian border near Ross Lake, joining the Luna Fire, which has more than tripled in size since July 8 as suppression crews rotated through the terrain. None of it has triggered a park-wide closure; the McMillan Creek drainage closure is narrow and specific to that area. But the pattern matters here: this is the same complex still repairing Stehekin's wastewater system from last year's flooding, in the same fire season the whole Pacific Northwest is having. If Big Beaver Trail, Ross Lake, or the Highway 20 corridor are on your itinerary, check the park's fire closures page the night before you go, not the week before — conditions here are moving day to day.

The Needles reopened Saturday after three weeks dark, but Elephant Hill, Lavender Canyon, and Davis Canyon Roads stay closed to vehicles and bikes. If your plan was the 4WD loop rather than the day hikes, you're still shut out.
Canyonlands closed the Needles District on June 28 as the Babylon Fire — burning in Bears Ears National Monument, never inside the park — pushed north toward Utah Highway 211, the district's only paved entrance. Every existing backcountry permit and campground reservation for the district was canceled through the closure. As containment climbed past 80 percent by mid-July, the district reopened at 8 a.m. Saturday, July 18, along with Highway 211 itself and the surrounding Manti-La Sal National Forest lands. What hasn't come back: Elephant Hill, Lavender Canyon Road, and Davis Canyon Road, all closed to motor vehicles and bicycles for now. Island in the Sky and the rest of the park were never closed.
Yosemite National Park
Vernal Fall's granite steps are wet, railing-less in places, and now packed shoulder to shoulder — the direct cost of dropping the entry reservation system. If Mist Trail is on your list, go before 7 a.m. or take the quieter approach to Nevada Fall instead.
Yosemite dropped its day-use reservation system for 2026 after five years of piloting one, betting that 2025 data showed most weekdays had room to spare. June arrived with the park's highest visitation for that month in a decade outside 2016, and by mid-July, video of hikers packed against the railing above Vernal Fall's Mist Trail — a route with a documented history of fatal falls — was circulating nationally. Parking lots fill by 7 a.m. now, and a staff survey found most park employees opposed dropping reservations in the first place. Two California senators have asked Interior to reinstate the system if the season worsens. Nothing has changed procedurally yet, and there's no indication it will before Labor Day.
Zion National Park
Zion closed the Narrows and every slot canyon Saturday as monsoon storms moved in — standard protocol, not an emergency, but it means the hike your whole day was built around might not happen. Have Zion Canyon or Angels Landing as backup.
